Hair: Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?

By:
Kelly Shanahan

Question :

I am considering the Epi-laser hair removal treatment. Is this a safe and effective method of hair removal? I haven't been able to find any studies or data on this question.

--Laurie

Answer :

Laser hair removal is pretty new, and there are a few studies showing that it is effective and fairly safe. One study on the EpiLight device showed 60 percent complete hair removal 12 weeks after a single treatment. Potential risks are burns and scarring. If you are considering laser hair removal, I suggest you see a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist who has a lot of experience using lasers and who has taken an intensive course in laser hair removal.

For more information on this, you can do a Medline search using the term "hair removal by laser." A Medline search engine is available here at iVillageHealth on the home page of this website.
